“The natural world and your own curiosity are great teachers,” says Daniel McDougal McDouglas McFly.

The activities on each of these pages can help you and your children engage with and explore the outdoors, gain a greater appreciation for nature, and make a positive difference in the future of out planet.

These activity pages are ideal for children ages 8-15. Some activities like “Silent 60 Seconds” and  “Recycling Relay Race” work well for younger children. “Environmental Superhero Reporter” or “Plant a Tree!” might be better suited for older students or ones with the guidance of a parent or teacher.

Kids can even write a letter to one of Daniel’s favorite environmental superheroes, Dr. Jane Goodall!

Daniel believes that planting trees is a great way to improve and beautify our environment. He shows how to plant a tree on the final page in the book, and here, on the kidinthekilt.com website where visitors can track when and where young Environmental Superheroes plant trees around the US!

Finally, we’d love to hear from you! Please send us your own ideas for fun things children can do to engage with nature and improve the environment. Or maybe you would like to share a video of your child having fun with one of our activities. Contact us and we will let you know how to submit your activity or video.

We’ll feature a selection on the website and in future editions of the book.

Daniel’s Superhero Activities

Upcyled Tree Art

Let’s make the world a more beautiful place by creating art! You can create Upcycled Tree Art using discarded items around your home. Use your imagination to create your masterpiece. You can even use natural items you find outdoors, such as leaves, sticks, pine cones, and more.

Silent 60 Seconds

Shhhhhhhhh! Do you hear that? Find a comfortable place outdoors to sit and close your eyes. Take a couple of deep breaths and listen. What do you hear? Is there a bird singing in a tree? Is the wind whispering to you?

Get a few friends together and have a Recycling Relay Race! Fill a bin with mixed items that are ready to go in your recycling bins. The goal is to get all the items properly sorted for recycling. Once you have everything sorted it’s ready to head to your local recycling location!

Environmental Superhero Reporter

An Environmental Superhero Reporter collects facts about environmental issues and presents them to people in their community. Find a scientist, park ranger, oceanographer, or another person who is helping to protect the environment and ask them questions about their job. Give your interview to your teacher, send it to your local paper, or even start your own blog!

Dear Dr. Jane Goodall

Dr. Jane Goodall has taught the world more about chimpanzees than anyone else. Would you like to ask her a question or just say hi? Write a letter to Dr. Jane Goodall and get a response from Dr. Goodall, her staff at the Goodall Institute, or from an Environmental Superhero like Daniel! Buy a book today and we’ll donate $1 to JGINepal to help fund conservation efforts.

Plant a Tree

Plant a tree and watch it grow! Create a journal to keep track of your tree’s growth. Daniel would love to see the tree you plant. Upload a photo to our gallery and we will add your name our list of tree planting Superheroes!

Guess My Animal

Think of an animal and have a friend ask you questions. See if they can guess what it is. Does it have fur, feathers, or scales?

Rock the World

Collect rocks and paint pictures or messages on them. Leave them around your community. Your rock will help brighten someone’s day.
